Yesterday, 11 March 2024, the collaboration between Italy and the Commonwealth was celebrated in the Press Room of the Parliament of the Italian Republic in Monte Citorio, an event which took place on the occasion of Commonwealth Day. This year the auspicious theme it was that of the «resilient common future».
Commonwealth Day 2024
The event is the result of the initiative and organization of the Commonwealth Club of Rome, an association chaired by Edward Mura. The introduction was by the general secretary of the Institute for Foreign Countries Cooperation (ICPE), Gianni Lattanzio, who also brought greetings from the Honorable Fabio Porta to the attendees. Subsequently, the welcome speeches of the Honorable Andrea Casu and the councilor of Roma Capitale, Honorable Mariano Angelucci, president of the XII International Relations Commission. In his speech Lattanzio highlighted Parliament's attention towards the Commonwealth, together with the importance of cooperation in facing the challenges of the changes taking place in the world.
The message sent by HM King Charles III
The video message from His Majesty, King Charles III, was also shown, words extremely appreciated by those present, while the ambassador of Malta, Carmel Vassallo, read the message sent by the Honorable Patricia Scotland, Secretary General of the Commonwealth, in which the importance of economic development was reiterated, as well as "strengthening our response to the climate crisis and transforming the provision of public services in our fifty-six member states".
Towards the election of the new Secretary General
On the same occasion, the candidates for the position of new secretary general of the Commonwealth were presented, who will be voted on next October at CHOGM, the G7 of the Commonwealth.
As far as culture is concerned, the issues relating to the possibility of awarding scholarships provided by the British School of Rome were addressed.

Nella giornata di ieri, 11 marzo 2024, presso la Sala Stampa del Parlamento della Repubblica Italiana a Monte Citorio è stata celebrata la collaborazione tra Italia e Commonwealth, evento che ha avuto luogo in occasione del Commonwealth Day. Quest’anno il tema d’auspicio è stato quello del «futuro comune resiliente».

La manifestazione è frutto dell’iniziativa e dell’organizzazione del Commonwealth Club di Roma, sodalizio presieduto da Edward Mura. L’introduzione è stata del segretario generale dell’Istituto Cooperazione Paesi esteri (ICPE), Gianni Lattanzio, che ha recato ai convenuti anche i saluti dell’onorevole Fabio Porta. Successivamente, gli interventi di benvenuto dell’onorevole Andrea Casu e del consigliere di Roma Capitale, onorevole Mariano Angelucci, presidente della XII Commissione Rapporti internazionali. Nel suo intervento Lattanzio ha evidenziato l’attenzione del Parlamento nei confronti del Commonwealth, unitamente all’importanza rivestita dalla cooperazione nell’affrontare le sfide dei cambiamenti in atto nel mondo.
Il messaggio inviato da SM Re Carlo III
È stato inoltre proiettato il videomessaggio di Sua Maestà, Re Carlo III, parole estremamente apprezzate dai presenti, mentre l’ambasciatore di Malta, Carmel Vassallo, ha letto il messaggio fatto pervenire dall’onorevole Patricia Scotland, segretario generale del Commonwealth, nel quale è stata ribadita l’importanza dello sviluppo sviluppo economico, oltreché del «potenziamento della nostra risposta alla crisi climatica e alla trasformazione della fornitura di servizi pubblici nei nostri cinquantasei Stati membri».
Verso l'elezione del nuovo Segretario Generale
Nella medesima occasione sono stati poi presentati i candidati alla carica di nuovo segretario generale del Commonwealth, che verrà votato nel prossimo mese di ottobre a CHOGM, il G7 del Commonwealth. Per quanto concerne invece la cultura, sono stati affrontati i temi relativi alla possibilità di assegnare borse di studio fornite dalla British School of Rome.
